The Right Way to Use Your Gift Card

Received a gift card – what next? Here’s how you can get the best value out of cards that you like and what you can do with cards that aren’t a good fit.

Spend it sooner rather than later.

Consumer patterns continue to shift from time-to-time. In the past, there have been instances of many stores shutting their doors too. So, if you intend to use your gift cards, the quicker you do it, the less likely you’re to forget about it.

Regift, resell, or donate.

If you receive a gift card from a store that’s not close to you, or you don’t intend to use it, give it to someone who will. Instead of throwing it away, find a friend or family member who will appreciate your unwanted gift. Alternatively, you can resell your gift card online or donate it to a local school or homeless shelter.

Avoid overspending (and underspending).

Beware of spending excessively on something you don’t like simply because the card makes it relatively cheaper. Before you make a purchase using the gift card, ask yourself if you really need the item. Also, make sure to check for deals and promotions to get the best deal. If you have a small amount left on your card, most retailers allow you to exchange it for cash if it falls below a threshold. For example, it ranges from $1 in Vermont and Rhode Island to $10 in California.

Try new things.

Gift cards are a great way to push you to try things you wouldn’t want to spend your money on. So, don’t think twice. Go out and try that new restaurant, shop for new clothing, or take that cooking class. This way, you may notice that the card brings more value to you than its worth in dollars.
