Stick to favorites
Pay close attention to where the recipient likes to dine, shop, and be entertained. Accordingly, choose the right gift card. For example, if your husband is the recipient and likes to buy clothes at Target®, don’t buy him a Nordstrom gift card. This is because the recipient is much more likely to use a gift card at an establishment he/she already visits frequently.

Make it convenient
Gift cards that can be claimed at restaurants and stores which are easy for the recipient to visit are more likely to get used. This means that the perfect gift card should be redeemable locally or online. If you aren’t sure where the card can be redeemed, consider checking locations on the store’s site or call the 1-800 number that’s listed on the back of the gift card before purchasing. If you don’t know the exact locations or you’re not sure how far the recipient will be able to travel, pick a gift card for a family of stores. For example, Gap gift cards can be redeemed at Banana Republic®, Old Navy®, or Gap Kids.
Avoid restrictions
Thanks to changes in gift card laws, most gift cards are now valid for at least five years from the date of their purchase. To be on the safe side, you should pick a gift card with fees and expiration dates that are clearly disclosed. By doing this, the recipient has access to all the necessary funds for as long as possible. If you pick a gift card with restrictions, add a note to the gift to ensure the recipient understands the limitations.
Pick the best delivery method
Companies offer a number of ways to deliver gift cards. For example via a text message, Facebook, and so on. Make sure you pick a gift card with the best delivery method.
