What To Do If You Lose Your Gift Card

Lost your gift card and unsure about what to do? While we can’t guarantee you’ll get your gift card back, these tips can help you get your card replaced.

1. Find the gift card number

Now, you’re probably wondering how to find the gift card number if you don’t have the gift card. Well, of course, having the physical card with you would be the easiest way to check the number, but if you don’t have the card, you may still be able to find the gift card number by checking the activation receipt, the purchase receipt, your email, or bank (credit card or debit card) statement. If you didn’t purchase the card yourself, consider asking the giver if they have the details of the gift card. This may be a little awkward, but it’s better than wasting a gift card.

2. Contact the gift card retailer

Once you have the gift card number, you should call the gift card seller (or reseller) that issued the card. Be prepared for questions, because the gift card retailer will need to ensure you aren’t trying to steal somebody’s gift card details. When you make the call, try to explain exactly what happened and provide them with as much information as you can. If the gift card has not been used, enquire if you can cancel the card and get a new one. If the card has been used, ask the merchant to give you details regarding where and when the card was redeemed. While merchants don’t have to replace a stolen card, they may just offer to, especially if the theft was due to a bigger fraud issue.

3. Contact your bank

If you cannot get a resolution from the gift card merchant, your best bet is to check whether your bank offers a buyer protection policy. Of course, this will only work if you used your credit card or debit card to pay for the card.

To keep your gift card from getting lost, make sure to keep it in a safe place. It’s also a good idea to make a note of the gift card number or, even better, take a photo of the gift card. This way you have a better chance of getting your gift card replaced even if you lose it.
